Books and Websites on Depression
Recommendations from one of our patients who recently suffered from
depression
- Understanding Depression by J Raymond DePaulo Jr. Pub BCA
I found this especially helpful at the beginning when I needed to
understand what was happening in broadly physical terms. This very good
on what depression is in terms of brain chemistry and how it feels. I
found this very useful when I felt completely overwhelmed by what was
happening to me, and did not feel able to take any responsibility for
what was happening or how to improve things for myself.
- Overcoming Depression by Paul Gilbert. Pub Robinson
I found this more useful as I got better and more able to cope with the
concept that I could contribute to my own recovery. Especially good on
how to recognise and deal with negative thought patterns.
- The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Recommended to me by a friend who is seriously ill with breast cancer. A
powerful book once you have regained your faith in life and want to
retain it.
Websites
The most useful website I found was this one:
http://www.nmhct.nhs.uk/pharmacy/depr1.htm and the associated page
depr2 both of which have some useful links.
Norfolk Mental Health Care Trust produces this. Very clear and
straightforward on the various drug treatments and how they work.
The Royal College of Psychiatrists website:
http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/info/help/dep/index/htm
There were also a lot of unhelpful websites; if anyone is surfing the
internet it is as well be to aware that there are some which have
contributions from people who are very unsympathetic and inclined to the
'pull yourself together, what have you got to be depressed about' school
of thought. I found some of these quite unsettling.
The Relax and Release Tape – Tina Everett
Very useful for relaxation.
Finally, I have found the gym (exercise referral through the surgery)
wonderful! I go three times a week – it makes me feel great. |
